If you're looking for a composter that will turn kitchen scraps and yard waste into rich, organic compost for your garden or flower beds, you may want to consider the Joraform JK 270 Compost Tumbler. Joraform (sometimes referred to as 'Jora') composters are well known throughout the world. Designed in Sweden due to tough recycling regulations, the Joraform JK 270 was originally tested on 466 households. The results from the testings were most impressive as was shown in report 4229 by the Swedish Authority for Environment Conservation.
The JK 270 is convenient and simple to use all year round. It allows you to enjoy seeing the conversion of your kitchen waste into nutritious compost. You can use the compost on your lawn, garden, potted plants, and flower beds.
Jora JK 270 Compost Tumbler Features & Benefits
- Insulated to allow temperatures to rise higher than 160oF. This results in faster and more efficient composting.
- Divided into 2 separate chambers. While you're filling one, the compost in the other chamber can mature. This is a big advantage over single chamber composters.
- Constructed for easy rotation.
- Positioned off the ground so you don't have to worry about rodents or pests getting in there.
- Capacity of up to 106 gallons.
- Attractive design.
- Made out of galvanized steel. Most tumblers on the market are made from plastics and similar materials.
We purchased the Jora JK 270 this past fall after reading many positive reviews on Amazon.com. We haven't been disappointed. The exterior still looks like it did from day one. It's easy to spin. You never notice odors coming from it. Having the dual chambers is a nice feature. The insulation allows it to get hotter than most others tumblers that don't have insulation. You can throw weeds in there and not have to worry about them germinating later…the 160+ degree heat destroys the seeds. The high temperature allows for fast decomposition and a healthy balance of greens and browns.
The biggest reason we decided to go with the JK 270 was because of several videos on Youtube showing plastic compost tumblers laying on the ground broken. Compost can get heavy and some of these cheap plastic tumblers will break over time. We don't have that worry with the JK 270. It's made of galvanized steel and is as heavy duty as they come. I saw someone once call it a "tumbler on steroids". That's a pretty accurate description.
What are the cons?
I'd say the only negatives I can think of are the price and assembly. At $389 currently on Amazon, it's not cheap. You're definitely paying more for quality. It also takes quite a bit of time to assemble and the instructions can be a bit confusing. Here's an excellent video on Youtube that shows the assembly….
All in all, the Joraform JK 270 is an excellent compost tumbler that is extremely heavy duty. It should make you great compost for many, many years.
