A solar powered generator can be a life saver in emergency situations. You don't have to worry about fuel or an engine not starting. The sun provides all of the power directly through your solar panel(s) and the energy flows into a battery that stores the power. Through the use of an inverter, you're able to turn this energy into a current that will power things such as lights, lanterns, cell phone chargers, laptops, power tools, and more.
Building a solar powered generator is much easier than you think. The components can easily be found at Amazon.com. At the bottom of the page, I've even included a few video tutorials showing you how to build one…step by step.
A solar powered generator can be as small or as large as you'd like to make it. You can use a single solar panel or link multiple solar panels together. You can even build your solar powered generator for well under $500…in fact, the main components you'll need for a small system will run you just over $300.
Components You'll Need For Your Solar Powered Generator
1) A solar panel – Renogy has a nice solar panel kit over on Amazon that also includes a 30 amp charge controller (the next item you'll need). You can find that kit here. It also comes with 2 – 20 foot cables (male and female) .
Renogy also has a 2 panel – 200 watt kit that's a great value and has excellent Amazon reviews. You can find it right here.
2) A charge controller – included with the Renogy solar panel kits listed above.
3) A deep cycle battery – You want to use a deep cycle battery for continuous energy, not a car battery made for cranking. Here's a well rated deep cycle battery over on Amazon., Chrome Battery's 35AH 12v DC DEEPCYCLE SLA Solar Energy Storage Battery.
4) An inverter – As stated earlier, the inverter is what turns the solar energy into a alternating current you can use for your household plug in items. Here's the best rated inverter we found over on Amazon, the BESTEK 1000w/1200w 12v to 110v Inverter Power Supply.
Depending on how you plan to build to build your solar powered generator, you may also need a battery box, a 12 volt DC meter, and a DC input. These are very inexpensive items and can be found on Amazon or at Walmart if you need them.
We've also included a few excellent video tutorials below showing several different solar powered generators being built.
